Heinrich's model may be simplified in stages while retaining the basic differentiation features:

  • variable compartment sizes can be replaced by constant sizes
  • the pairs of snares replaced by single self-complementary snares
  • the vesicles arising from each compartment no longer distinguished kinetically
  • the two compartments treated antisymmetrically.
